In the summer of 2016, following his triumph with Portugal in securing the European Championship, Cavaleiro parted ways with Monaco, enjoying a six-month break from professional football. He then joined Shanghai SIPG at the onset of 2017, yet his tenure with the club lasted just a year, during which he appeared in only six matches. At the beginning of 2018, Cavaleiro bid farewell to Shanghai SIPG and retired from his professional career.
